Regional
Business Community Releases Annual Vote Record Holding
Elected Officials Accountable
The Temecula Valley, Murrieta, Lake Elsinore Valley,
Menifee and Wildomar Chambers of Commerce tracked 25
potential new laws in 2008 that might have an impact on
the regional business community. The Chambers, through
their regional business advocacy coalition, the
Southwest California Legislative Council (SWCLC),
discussed and took a position of support or opposition
on each potential new law and communicated those
positions with state legislators throughout 2008. The
SWCLC focused its efforts this year on the most critical
potential laws that would impact the business community
in a negative way.
“We focused our efforts this year on critical pieces of
legislation and tracked each issue with our
legislators,” stated Greg Morrison, Chairman the SWCLC.
“By doing so, all of our state legislators voted with
the chamber on average over 94% of the time,” continued
Morrison.
“Each Chamber will continue to work hard at tracking
potential new laws in 2009 in order to protect the
business community and will work with the new
legislators as they take office,” stated Morrison. “We
are issuing our fourth annual vote record since 2005 in
which we continue to hold our local legislators
accountable to the business community,” continued
Morrison.
The Chambers lobbied during the 2008 legislative session
for our legislators to OPPOSE 13 potential new laws and
SUPPORT 12 potential new laws. The Chambers’ official
positions on each of the 25 bills have been available
online at www.SouthwestCA.biz including summaries and
explanations of why the Chambers’ opposed and supported
each of the 25 potential new laws.
To reach the “percentage FOR pro-jobs legislation,” the
Chambers’ tallied the number of times our legislators
voted for the Chambers’ position and divided that total
by the total number of potential new laws in which each
legislator voted. A potential new law is not figured
into the vote record percentage if a legislator, for
whatever reason, did not vote or if the potential new
laws died before the legislator had an opportunity to
vote.
